McLaren’s new 650S should already make short work of its supercar rivals, including Ferrari’s new 458 Speciale, but McLaren is far from finished with development of the car. A new track-focused version has been hinted at by McLaren chief tester Chris Goodwin, which we presume would be lighter, stiffer and more aerodynamic, and perhaps more powerful too.

But wait; wasn’t the 650S meant to be the track-focused version of the 12C? Not quite, as Goodwin explained recently to Auto Express.

He said that only about 12 percent of McLaren customers like to take their cars to the track, so the 650S was developed with a bias towards road driving. He also said there was a lot more McLaren engineers could do with the 650S.

No details on what a track-focused 650S would be like were mentioned, but with the stock car already extracting 641 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8, we suspect most of the changes will center on reducing weight and increasing downforce. The track-focused version of the 12C, the 12C GT Sprint, shows what's possible.

Note, McLaren has at least two other supercars in the works, one positioned below the 12C and one positioned above it.
