The CL is dead, long live the S-Class Coupe. That's right, a new coupe form of the S-Class sedan has been previewed today at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, a harbinger of the car that's coming to replace the CL-Class.

Whether the new two-door take on the S-Class theme is to your liking or not, it's sure to be one of the most high-tech, high-luxury coupes on the market when it finally reaches production form.

Mercedes-Benz has made a point of emphasizing its high-tech abilities at this year's Frankfurt show, with the Intelligent Drive and plugin hybrid systems of the S-Class taking center stage, flanked by the S63 AMG and the new GLA.

The Concept S-Class Coupe comes closely on the heels of the newly redesigned S-Class sedan, but brings with it a design geared more toward emotion and style than the more reserved sedan. As Gorden Wagener, vice president of design at Daimler, put it, "Design needs the sublime! Because design is the best brand ambassador. At the center of our work is sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury, because this is precisely what gets to the heart of our brand philosophy--the bipolarity of intelligence and emotion."

With a sleek, flowing shape, the Concept S-Class Coupe measures 198.8 inches long, 77 inches wide, and just 55.5 inches tall. The 116-inch wheelbase makes it a fairly large coupe, but despite the length, the rear seat doesn't appear to offer much in the way of leg room. Giving the car its stance, 21-inch wheels (wrapped in 265/35 front and 295/35 rear tires) fill out the arches.

Inside the Concept S-Class Coupe, familiar S-Class sedan design themes play across a canvas of white leather and bright metal. The same instruments and displays found in the sedan are also used here, giving a fair preview of what a production model might look like.

Under the hood of the Concept S-Class Coupe lies a familiar power plant: the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, rated at 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. In addition to the Magic Body Control system, which helps the suspension adjust to the road ahead, Road Surface Scan can further determine surface undulations and other imperfections thanks to its stereo-camera system.
