Racing isn't cheap. Even racing cheap cars isn't cheap. And drag racing is, in dollars per second, perhaps the least cheap of all. Straight-strip fans and competitors often talk about success being measured in cubic money. So Dodge's 2010 version of the Challenger Drag Pak is likely a welcome addition, offering a car built to run in NHRA Stock, Super Stock and Comp Eliminator classes with a starting price of $39,999.
OK, so it's still not a cheap plaything by any conventional definition of the word, but considering it's a fully-built, track-only race car, a hair under $40,000 is actually pretty inexpensive. The new car will be coming this summer, leaving enthusiasts with a few months to wait, as the current 2009 vehicles are sold out.
The Drag Pak is a shorter, lighter version of the production Challenger, powered by a 6.1-liter V-8 mated to either a five-speed auto or a six-speed stick. It's not street legal, but it's 1,000 pounds lighter than the road-going car thanks to elimination of some components and systems found on the standard version. It also adds some racing kit, including a carbon fiber lift-off hood with functional scoop, seats styled after the Dodge Viper's, polycarbonate door windows, light-weight cooling system, manual steering, light-weight front brakes and a cable-operated throttle linkage and pedal.
All 2010 Challenger Drag Pak cars come in Stone White paint, a classic color that can easily be added to with vinyl graphics or other custom graphics.
