Last week we talked about things you should before you set out on your Spring Break road trip. Today, we are going to cover what you should in case of an automotive emergency along the way. It is all fun and games until a flat tire leaves your spring break punctured.

The planning should start before you even roll out of the driveway, so here are some things to consider. First, you want to make sure that you have a current insurance card, registration tags or card and current state inspection (if required). Next, it might be worth checking on your auto club status to make sure you are paid up and able to call on them in the event of a roadside emergency. If you don't have an auto club like AAA, then check with your insurance company, you might be able to add roadside assistance even if it is just for a couple weeks or a month. Your insurance might even give you a trial offer to get you interested. Also check with your credit card providers, they might have a special or discounted rate for roadside assistance.

The final thing you want to check (besides going threw our previous maintenance article) is to make sure your spare tire is in good shape. Basically, you want a spare tire that has tread and the proper inflation. Most tire shops will be happy to inspect it for you, but make sure there isn’t a charge—if there is find a place that will do it as a complementary service. I suggest places like Discount Tire or your local full-service gas station.

Bottom line—by checking your spare tire and figuring out your roadside assistance situation, you will save yourself time and aggravation. As we all know, Spring Break is about the fun, so don’t get stranded in the middle of Nevada.
