Porsche, with its full line of vehicles and rapidly increasing sales, is among them, so it’s not surprising to hear that even the legendary sports car manufacturer is starting to make concessions in order to improve emissions.
One idea near the top of the list is the inclusion of a new four-cylinder engine in its lineup, reports of which have been circulating since 2008.
Speaking with Autocar recently, Porsche’s former R&D chief Wolfgang Durheimer has revealed that the automaker is working on a new four-cylinder engine and that it will power the next-generation Boxster and Cayman models.
“We have a four-cylinder boxer engine under development,” Durheimer said. The former Porsche exec went on to reveal that the new engine could even be applied in the 911 though he stressed that the iconic model will remain a six-cylinder for the foreseeable future.
The new engine is also expected to power Porsche’s new entry-level Roadster model. Despite sharing a platform with similar models from Volkswagen and Audi, Porsche is thought to be keen to develop its own powertrain for the car.
As for the engine itself, it’s expected to be a 2.5-liter unit, available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms, with the latter producing upwards of 360 horsepower. It’s expected to debut in the next-generation Porsche Boxster, which is rumored to be unveiled around the end of the year.
