Mazda this week began production of the all-new MX-5 Miata, which is due to go on sale here later in the year as a 2016 model. The home of the MX-5 is Mazda’s Ujina Plant No.1 located in Hiroshima, Japan, and it is at this plant that Fiat’s version of the new MX-5, which was recently confirmed to be called the “124 Spider”, will also be built.
The first 2016 MX-5s rolling off the line, like the one shown here, are all destined for the Japanese market where the car officially goes on sale in June. Following the sales start in Japan, the MX-5 will be progressively rolled out to overseas markets.

The latest MX-5, the nameplate's fourth-generation, or the ‘ND’ if you’re a hardcore fan, will see total MX-5 production tick pass the million milestone mark eventually. Mazda’s cumulative total for the previous three generations already exceeds 950,000 units, making it the Guinness World Record holder for the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car.
For the U.S. market, the 2016 MX-5 will come with a 2.0-liter engine good for 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.
