There’s a sexy new four-door coupe-SUV wearing a tristar badge this year, and it has a super-hot AMG variant, too: the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe 4Matic.

Yes, that’s quite a mouthful. Fortunately, it’s an eyeful too.

Getting straight to the heart of the AMG matter, the GLE63 S Coupe 4Matic is powered by a 577-horsepower, 561-lb-ft twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine, which makes it hit 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds.

Gearshifts are handled by the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox, and as the 4Matic moniker in the model name suggests, the GLE63 includes full-time all-wheel drive, with a 40:60 front:rear torque bias, intended to improve handling and driving dynamics. Very large 22-inch wheels wrapped in 285/40 front and 325/35 rear tires provide ample grip.

As AMG chief Tobias Moers puts it, “We see great potential in this vehicle segment, which is new to Mercedes-AMG. The GLE63 Coupe is the logical progression of our ambitious growth strategy – after all, in 1999 with the first high-performance SUV ML55 AMG, we established a completely new segment. The new GLE63 Coupe will inspire SUV fans focused on dynamics while at the same time representing a new interpretation of driving performance.”

In addition to the mechanical bits that make the GLE63 a true AMG product, there are a handful of advanced electronics systems designed to pull the most performance out of the chassis and make it accessible to the driver. Dynamic Select offers several modes for the driver to select from, ranging from Comfort to Sport Plus. The Drive Select system adjusts roll stabilization, damping, suspension tune, throttle responsiveness, transmission mapping, and more. With the AMG Ride Control package, Airmatic suspension is included; Active Curve system with ADS Plus is also included.

Beyond the AMG-specific hardware and software, there are the AMG-upgraded exterior and interior aesthetics. On top of the coupe-like SUV design of the standard GLE, first revealed online this past December, the GLE63 S AMG gets the first SUV application of the “A-wing” front-end design as well as a lower front splitter under an air dam with larger air inlets, flared wheel arches, a rear diffuser, and a rear tailgate lip spoiler among other tweaks.

Inside, the GLE63 S AMG receives updates to materials as well as design to reflect its sportier bearings. The front seats get larger bolsters to better hold occupants in place, as well as AMG crests embossed in the head rests; a unique 3-spoke Performance steering wheel with shift paddles; an AMG-designed instrument cluster; and more.

A host of standard equipment comes with the GLE63 S AMG Coupe 4Matic, including, among other items:

• Adaptive Brake Assist
• Attention Assist
• Collision Prevention Assist Plus
• LED Intelligent Light System
• Pre-Safe system
• Surround View Camera System
• Crosswind Assist
• Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system

Optional extras for the sporty four-door SUV-coupe include a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround sound system; Driver Assistance Package with Distronic Plus; a performance exhaust system; carbon fiber / piano black trim; matte black wheels; and more.
