Although it was largely expected that Mercedes-AMG would eventually launch a high-performance Black Series version of its new GT sports car, the boss of the official Mercedes-Benz tuner has now confirmed the news.

“Sooner or later there will be a Black Series version,” Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers told EVO.

However, the car is unlikely to arrive anytime soon. That’s because there will be other versions of the GT in between, including possibly a convertible.

“There is more to come from the GT first, though—more variants,” Moers explained.

Like previous Black Series efforts, expect the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series to be the most powerful in the range. It should also be the lightest and offer the most downforce through a series of aerodynamic mods. For a taste of what’s to come, check out our first drive of the SLS AMG Black Series.

The most powerful GT variant at present is the GT S, which is rated at 503 horsepower. However, we know the M178 twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 powering the car has much more potential. It will eventually replace all V-8 engines in the Mercedes-AMG lineup including the current twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8, which in some guises is rated at 577 hp.
