While we'll have to wait until we can get our hands on one to render our own opinions, this video from BMW goes into greater detail about how the hybrid and gasoline engine systems work together to provide BMW-worthy performance. Of course, that hybrid system is just one of the many high-tech aspects of the new i8.
Combining a 131-horsepower electric motor on the front axle with a turbocharged 231-horsepower three-cylinder engine at the rear for a total of 362 horsepower, with a 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds, the BMW i8 aims to be among the first non-hypercar hybrids to injects honest high-performance ability into the electric-only capable segment.
Can it succeed? Will BMW's new vision for the near future of performance cars pan out? Or will it underwhelm, like so many over-promised and under-delivered "performance" hybrids have so far? What we've seen and heard so far is promising, but we simply can't know for sure until we've been behind the wheel.
