It was ten years ago that the first Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, a hardened version of the already tough Jeep Wrangler, made its debut. Named after one of America’s most demanding off-road trails, the vehicle featured Dana 44 axles, Rock-Trac four-wheel-drive, 16-inch alloys and diamond plate rocker panels.

Suffice it to say, the Rubicon models were the most extreme Wranglers ever produced, especially the Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited models, which brought even more utility to the table. Now, Jeep is celebrating its original Wrangler Rubicon with a special 10th Anniversary Edition, which makes its debut today at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Available as a two-door Wrangler or four-door Wrangler Unlimited, the Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is the most capable Wrangler ever produced, according to Jeep. It comes with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and customers have the choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic.

The standard four-wheel-drive system has electronic-locking front and rear Dana 44 axles that receive power through a Rock-Trac transfer case with a “4-Low” ratio of 4:1. A 4.10 axle ratio front and rear is also standard, as are Tru-Lok locking differentials.

Exclusive features of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition include a one-half inch increase in ride height versus the standard Rubicon model thanks to BF Goodrich KM2 265/70R17 tires.

These are mounted on 17-inch Rubicon-style aluminum wheels painted satin black with polished faces and a red Jeep Wrangler “icon” logo on the outside lip.

Black front and rear steel off-road bumpers toughen up the exterior, with the front bumper featuring removable end caps and a winch-capable design. A dual-intake Power Dome hood helps aid in engine cooling and is joined by red tow hooks, Mopar rock rails and special “10th Anniversary” and “Rubicon” badges.

Inside, owners will find red leather seats with “Rubicon 10th Anniversary” embroidered on the headrests, along with a “10th Anniversary” signature plaque and an electronic module that provides info on oil pressure, oil temperature and tire pressure.

Some final touches include Mopar slush mats, an axle locker and sway-bar disconnect switches, and a plaque mounted in the dash tray that features the vehicle’s technical data, such as axle type and ratio, tire size, transfer case crawl ratio and manufacturer location.

Like previous Wrangler Rubicon specials, numbers will be limited so interested buyers best act fast. Sales commence in the spring of 2013.
