When it finally goes on sale, just in time for summer of 2013, the F-Type will come in three different flavors. The base model will come with a 335-horsepower version of Jaguar's new supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, and this will be followed by a mid-spec model with a 375-horsepower version of this same engine.
The range-topper, which we’ve seen testing the most in prototype form and is expected to be called the F-Type R, will get an updated version of Jaguar’s supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. This engine in its current form already develops upwards of 542 horsepower, though Jaguar is likely to limit the output in the F-Type so that its new sports car doesn’t steal the performance halo from its current flagship, the XKR-S. Expect an output somewhere around the 450-horsepower mark for the F-Type R.
All F-Types will come strictly with rear-wheel drive as well as an eight-speed automatic and engine stop-start technology to help boost efficiency. Further improving the car’s green credentials will be a lightweight chassis and body composed entirely of aluminum. The added benefit of this light and rigid structure is superior dynamics, the perfect tool for fending off some tough competition.
With the V-6 F-Types taking on the Boxsters and Z4s of the world, the V-8-powered model would compete nicely with the Aston Martin V8 Vantage as well as lesser versions of the Porsche 911. This would then leave the door open for Jaguar to move its next-generation XK further upscale, allowing it to compete with higher positioned GTs like the Aston Martin Vanquish and Porsche 911 Turbo.
