While the two cars are virtually identical, final specifications are expected to differ and we’re sure that despite the similarities each will have its own distinct legion of fans.
This means that there’s room for Scion and Subaru to price their sports cars differently, though USA Today reports that the Subaru BRZ’s pricetag will be almost the same as the FR-S’ sticker.
Subaru states that it’s not yet ready to announce pricing on its BRZ, even though the car is due to go on sale in April or May.
While both the BRZ and FR-S are expected to retail for roughly the same amount, Scion has stated that it is applying its “Pure Pricing” rules to the FR-S, which means no haggling. It will be interesting to see if Subaru dealers take advantage of this by offering discounts on the BRZ to undercut its Scion rival. Strong expected demand and possibly tight supply, however, will likely mean that nobody will be receiving any bargains.
Both cars come powered by the same 2.0-liter ‘Boxer’ four-cylinder engine, which thanks to direct-injection technology and a relatively high 12.5:1 compression ratio results in an impressive 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. That power is transferred to the pavement via a standard Torsen limited-slip differential.
They also both return an EPA-rated fuel economy of 22/30 mpg city/highway when fitted with the manual. Opt for the automatic, and the numbers jump to 25/34 mpg city/highway.
