In response to a spate of harsh reviews criticizing the complexity of the Blue Oval’s latest MyFord Touch interface system, Ford has announced today that it will be launching a new and improved version claimed to offer simpler graphics and easier to use functions.

The new version will debut on the upcoming 2013 Ford Escape, Flex and Taurus and eventually filter across the automaker’s lineup. The best part is that existing MyFord Touch users won’t miss out as the latest version will be offered as a free software upgrade on older vehicles.

If you’ve never heard of MyFord Touch, or its upmarket sibling, MyLincoln Touch, the system is essentially a touch-screen vehicle interface that allows occupants to control a vast array of features including everything from climate control settings to the stereo and even your smartphone.

The biggest change with the latest version is the adoption of graphics and controls that are easier to use. Additionally, customers should also experience significantly faster touch-screen response times, which Ford says was one of the top complaints received about the current system.

Other upgrades include support for tablet devices and Audible.com audiobooks, improved navigation maps and enhanced voice recognition interaction.

As mentioned, all of the improvements will be offered to existing owners of MyFord Touch-equipped vehicles, including the 2011 and 2012 Ford Explorer and Edge and the 2012 Focus. Owners of 2011 and 2012 Lincoln MKX crossovers will also receive the upgrade for their MyLincoln Touch systems.
