Porsche is adding a new member to the 911 family in the form of the Carrera GTS, which will be making its world debut later this month at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.

The new GTS is positioned just above the 911 Carrera S and in keeping with that positioning receives a slight bump in power. The car’s 3.8-liter flat six engine has been tuned to produce 23 horsepower more than the one in the Carrera S, now coming in at 408 horsepower. Peak torque remains at 310 pound-feet but is available at 4,200 rpm, 200 rpm lower than in the Carrera S.

The additional performance is the result of a special resonance intake manifold that features six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps to switch between power- and torque-optimized geometry (the Carrera S has just one). Added to this is a sports exhaust system with twin dual tailpipes producing a unique sound. The outer shells of the exhaust pipes are painted in black and their inner tubes are polished on the outside and nano-coated.

As standard, the Carrera GTS has a six-speed manual gearbox and the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is available as an option, both sending drive to the rear wheels only. In comparison with the Carrera S, top speed of the GTS with manual transmission rises by 2mph to 190 mph. In general, acceleration from 0-62 mph improves by 0.1 seconds; for a GTS Coupe with PDK and a Sport Chrono Package Plus in Sport Plus mode the benchmark sprint takes just 4.2 seconds.

Visually differentiating the GTS from the Carrera S and improving its handling is the 44 mm wider body of all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models--including a widened rear track but with the aforementioned rear-wheel drive. The GTS also sports 19 inch glossy black alloys, a custom SportDesign bodykit with black highlights and Carrera GTS logos on the doors and rear lid, in black or silver depending on the body color.

In combination with the standard black interior color, the centre sections of the driver and passenger sport seats are covered with black Alcantara. A new SportDesign steering wheel has also been fitted, and this, too, is covered in Alcantara.

First sales will start in Europe this December, with a U.S. arrival pegged for shortly after that.
