Mazda will officially launch the all-new 2008 Mazda Tribute Hybrid SUV at the Detroit Motor Show this week with sales expected to start midway through the year. On “full” electric mode, the Tribute Hybrid can reach speeds of up to 25mph thanks to the 70kW (94hp) electric motor. A modified version of Mazda’s familiar 2.3L four-cylinder engine running the Atkinson combustion cycle adds another 133hp at 6,000 rpm and 124 lb.-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm.

Drive is sent to the wheels via an electronically controlled CVT with front-wheel drive as standard or an optional electronic four-wheel-drive set up. The vehicle will be available in two different trims, Touring and Grand Touring, and comes with 16in wheels as standard.

Storage space is compromised due to the 330-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery pack located and sealed in the rear load floor. Rear seats get an asymmetrically split 60:40 configuration, and the tailgate features a rear window that lifts separately for added convenience.
