It was a one-two finish for the Mercedes AMG team in yesterday’s 2016 Formula One British Grand Prix, with local hero Lewis Hamilton securing his third straight victory at the event after a dominant run in the wet-dry conditions.

Hamilton's teammate Nico Rosberg was second but a post-race penalty of 10 seconds saw the German demoted to third place. The penalty was handed to Rosberg after stewards determined that radio instructions handed to the driver late in the race to deal with gearbox trouble constituted tips on how to drive the car, breaching the regulation that the driver must drive the car alone and unaided.

Rosberg’s misfortune ended up being a boon for Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who finished third but was bumped up to the second. The Dutch youngster ran an impressive race, even challenging Rosberg at the midway point with a brilliant pass at Becketts, though the German reclaimed the position shortly after.

Red Bull’s other driver Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth, and fifth went to Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen more than a minute off the pace of the winner. It was a disastrous race for the Italian team, especially for star driver Sebastian Vettel who suffered his own gearbox troubles as well as a spin and even a penalty for forcing another car off track. The 4-time world champion ended up in ninth.

In sixth and seventh places were Force India drivers Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg, respectively. And in eighth was Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz. Rounding out the top ten was Toro Rosso’s other driver Daniil Kvyat.

There weren’t many dramas further back in the field. McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, who finished 13th, suffered a massive spin through the gravel at Abbey, and Renault’s Jolyon Palmer, who along with teammate Kevin Magnussen failed to finish, was handed a stop-go penalty after he left a pit stop with one of his wheels not properly attached.

Thanks to his latest win, Hamilton is now just one point behind Rosberg in the 2016 Drivers’ Championship. He sits on 167 points versus the 168 of Rosberg. Räikkönen is a distant third with 106 points. In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes has 335 points versus the 204 of Ferrari and 198 of Red Bull. The next race is the Hungarian Grand Prix in a fortnight.
