2017 Volvo S90 Revealed Ahead Of Detroit Auto Show: Video

Follow Viknesh

After numerous leaks, we finally have our first official look at Volvo’s all-new S90 sedan. The luxurious mid-sizer, which makes its world debut next month at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, is the second model in Volvo’s brand renaissance and, like the XC90 that precedes it, is based on the modular SPA platform.

The S90 will go on sale next year, as a 2017 model. It replaces the aging S80 in the Volvo lineup and competes with other luxury mid-size sedans such as the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. That’s a tough set of competitors but the Volvo is said to pack some impressive materials and technology, including semi-autonomous driving features.

We don't have all the details yet but we do know that in the United States there will be three engine choices available: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in a T5; a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in a T6; and a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four working with an electric drive system in a range-topping T8 Twin Engine.

It’s likely front wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive available on some versions. No performance numbers have been released but the aforementioned powertrains in other Volvo cars produce 240 horsepower, 302 hp and 400 hp respectively.

As expected, the car’s styling is reminiscent of the sleek Concept Coupe from the 2013 thanks to elements like the Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights integrated with the headlights, as well as the C-shaped tail-lights. Inside, the designers have taken cues taken from the XC90, with a large infotainment screen and plenty of real metal and wood panels included.

Among the new tech is Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous feature. The second generation of Pilot Assist, launched now in the S90, extends the scope of this semi-autonomous function to not only include low speed traffic jam situations but also highway driving at speeds of up to 80 mph.

As previously reported, the S90 and previous XC90 are just the first steps in Volvo’s plans to overhaul most of its lineup with SPA-based models over the coming years. Next up will be a V90 wagon replacing the current V70/XC70 and after this we’ll see replacements for the S60, V60 and XC60 models. Volvo will also introduce a range of compact cars using a second modular platform, the CMA, developed with parent company Geely.

Stay tuned for the debut of the 2017 Volvo S90 at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. In the meantime, watch the reveal in the video below and learn about the other cars headed for the Detroit show by visiting our dedicated hub.
