Are Drop Tops The Key To Cool? (Part 2)

Follow Michael

In Part 1 of “Are Drop Tops the Key to Cool?”, I promised that we would take a look at this year’s most exciting luxury convertibles in order to give you an inside peek at the drop tops of 2010 and 2011. But there’s a huge selection of convertibles out there and it wouldn’t be fair to compare a 2011 BMW 1-Series with a 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet, much less a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. So, to that end, we’re going to be dividing up our comparison into four sections.

The first article, “Fun in the Sun,” will focus on the smallest convertibles available: the two-seaters, including the Nissan 370Z, the Porsche Boxster, the BMW Z4, the Mercedes-Benz SLK, and the Audi TT. “Comfy Cruisers,” will focus on medium-priced vehicles in the luxury car market that have at least four seats. Featured vehicles will include the Volvo C70, the BMW 1-Series, the BMW 3-Series, the Audi A5, the Infiniti G37, and the Lexus IS C. Then, moving on to the “Stately Sunmobiles,” we’ll compare vehicles from upper ends of the luxury convertible market designed to be more sumptuous rides--such as a gran turismo (grand touring car). Our comparison will include cars like the BMW 6-Series, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, the Bentley Continental GTC, and the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. Finally, our look at the “Sporty Sunchasers” will highlight today’s most exciting convertible sports cars, including the Chevrolet Corvette, the Jaguar XK, the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster, the Aston Martin DB9 Volante, the Maserati GranCabrio, and the Ferrari California.

Can’t get enough of these cars? Don’t worry because after our comparisons, we’re going to be taking a deeper look at many of these vehicles individually. Stay tuned...
