The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport took the laurel of fastest production car away from Shelby Supercars Ultimate Aero recently. While America had the record since 2007 with a 257 mph top speed, the Super Sport took the record going nearly 11mph more at 267.91.
However this weekend revealed the Veyron Super Sport beat another record on the best show about cars in the world—Top Gear.
Top Gear’s track is similar to Sebring as part of the track is built from an old runway. The layout was designed by Lotus Cars and is built to test the overall ability of a car. The program takes cars they drive and almost like the Nürburgring, base the performance on the car to how quickly it does a lap. There are two requirements to make the number stick: that the car needs to have road legal tires and have enough ground clearance to go over a speed bump.
It took forever for Top Gear to get the original Veyron to drive around the track, but there was barely any waiting for this power lap. When it did, the number was 1:18.4, a good number but not number one that everyone expected it to be.
This new Super Sport didn’t disappoint. It completed the lap 1:16.8 seconds beating the Gumpert Apollo’s lap.
Ultimate Aero has been put on record as trying to take back the fastest production car record, but maybe they should also work on beating the Bugatti on Top Gear for a one-two punch.
