We're not shocked the 2019 BMW M5 Competition makes more power than the company says. While we suspect that plenty of modern sports cars feature conservative power ratings, just how much more power the M5 Competition makes is rather shocking.

Car and Driver hooked the Bavarian sports sedan to a dyno to see if suspicions that it made more than its advertised power were warranted, and on Monday, reported back on its findings. While the regular M5 makes 600 horsepower with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine under the hood, BMW says the Competition variant is good for 617 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque. The dyno showed the hotter version of the sedan makes closer to 700 hp.

When the test was complete, the dyno showed 617 hp and 606 pound-feet of torque at to the wheels. Horsepower ratings are reported at the crank, and a 10-15 percent loss is expected by the time the power makes it to the wheels. Knowing modern drivetrains are more efficient at keeping losses to a minimum, the magazine estimated output at the crank approaches 700 hp. The extra horsepower the dyno showed hiding makes sense considering the M5 and the M5 Competition dashed to 60 mph in less than 3.0 seconds during the magazine's testing. Keep in mind, the car also weighs a substantial 4,200 pounds. Officially, BMW says the M5 Competition will do 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds.

Peak power arrived at 6,000 rpm during the test, though the engine will rev for another 1,200 rpm. The magazine said it's possible there was more to come from the engine, but noted torque had already started to drop off, so these results are likely concrete.

The hidden power makes the M5 Competition's $110,995 asking price slightly easier to swallow. Buyers now know that the car really pushes out power figures more akin to a Dodge Challenger Hellcat, but with 2.2 fewer liters of engine. That's not so bad, is it?
