The 2017 Detroit auto show kicks off in less than a week and while the list of exhibitors is slightly down on last year, there’s still plenty to look forward to.

The show is also where we learn the winners of the prestigious North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards, which once again has a couple of Motor Authority editors serving as judges.

The action all unfolds on January 9 and to stay on top of it all simply visit our dedicated hub and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. In the meantime, here’s our roundup of some of the vehicles set to appear, and what we know about them so far.

Audi Q8: Audi in the next few years will introduce a coupe-like SUV called the Q8. In Detroit, we’ll get a preview of the vehicle with a concept of the same name. The Q8 concept—and production version it will spawn—will be Audi’s first SUV penned by current design boss Marc Lichte, shown here. He is expected to make his mark by introducing a distinct look that will set the vehicle apart from the rest of the Audi fold, which has been criticized for looking too similar. Already from some teasers we can see that the Q8 concept adopts a very aggressive look.

Infiniti QX50: Another show car in Detroit previewing an upcoming SUV will be the Infiniti QX50 concept. Infiniti has already revealed the vehicle which we’re glad to report looks just like the stunning QX Sport Inspiration concept shown in 2016. Hopefully the next-generation QX50 that the latest concept previews looks just as good. The concept also previews some new technology bound for the next QX50 including Nissan and Infiniti’s ProPilot driver assist feature and VC-Turbo variable compression engine.

Volkswagen I.D.: Starting from about 2020, Volkswagen will launch in quick succession a family of electric cars based on a new modular platform known as the MEB. The first member of this familiar will be a hatchback about the size of the Golf, which was previewed by the I.D. concept at the 2016 Paris auto show. In Detroit, we’ll see a new I.D. concept believed to be a minivan. Unfortunately, the handful of teaser shots released by the automaker don’t reveal much.

Rinspeed Oasis: Swiss design firm Rinspeed is constantly trying to predict the automotive landscape of the future. In recent years the company has bet big on self-driving technology, and concepts like the XchangE, Budii and Etos have been the result. Its latest effort is the Oasis, a vehicle designed for the city landscape and featuring an electric powertrain as well as full self-driving capability. Its signature element is a small garden plot behind the windshield.

Trumpchi GS7, GE3 and EnSpirit: State-owned Chinese automaker GAC is keen to get a foothold in the new car market here in the United States. It hopes to start selling cars here in 2018, one of which could be the Trumpchi GS7 due to be unveiled next week at the 2017 Detroit auto show. Alongside the GS7 will be two other vehicles, a small electric car called the GE3 and a concept car called the EnSpirit that’s said to blend elements of a sedan, SUV and convertible.

PRODUCTION CARS

2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe: The current E-Class Coupe was never much of a looker. We’re glad all of that is changing with the redesigned model which arrives for the 2018 model year. It’s scheduled to go on sale this summer, with the first models being the E400 and E400 4Matic, both powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 making 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Sadly, we’re hearing that there won’t be an E63 Coupe from Mercedes-AMG. Instead, the Mercedes tuner is expected to introduce a tamer E50 Coupe.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA: Another Mercedes debuting in Detroit will be a facelifted GLA. From an official teaser and spy shots of prototypes, we know that the vehicle will get revised exterior styling including a more rugged face. We’re not expecting many mechanical changes. This is because Mercedes just made some changes for the 2016 model year.

2018 Lexus LS teaser

2018 Lexus LS teaser

2018 Lexus LS: Lexus’ flagship sedan, the LS, is long overdue for a redesign. The current model was introduced as far back as the 2007 model year and simply updated over the years. Thankfully, there’s nothing carried over from the current car on the redesigned model. For example, the car will get the rear-wheel-drive platform that debuted in the 2018 Lexus LC. The new platform should lead to less mass, a lower center of gravity and improved stiffness and rigidity.

2018 Kia GT (Stinger): It’s not just luxury cars that will be debuting in Detroit. Kia will present a new sports sedan based on the GT concept that we first saw at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. The new car, which will be called a K8 in Kia’s home market of Korea and possibly a Stinger everywhere else, has hardly been a secret. We’ve already seen a number of prototypes, and a photo of a pre-production example leaked last November revealing a design that’s close to the original concept.

2018 Subaru WRX STI

2018 Subaru WRX STI

2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI: Subaru will present updated versions of its WRX and WRX STI, due for the 2018 model year. Both cars adopt a revised front fascia, highlighted by a more pronounced grille design and larger intakes. There have also been some changes made to the cabin to improve comfort and refinement. Unfortunately, there are no changes to the powertrains, meaning the WRX still has 268 hp and the WRX STI 305 hp.

2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: We know Chevrolet is working on a new range-topper for its C7 Corvette lineup, a model more potent than the Z06. It hasn’t been confirmed that the car will be at the Detroit auto show but all indications point that way. The car is expected to use the Corvette’s ZR1 badge, last used on a C6 Corvette range-topper, and it should have more power than the 650 hp of the Z06. The car is also expected to be the last hurrah for front-engined ‘Vettes as the C8 Corvette, due out in a year, is known to be going the mid-engine route.
