Installing a modern V-8 is a great way to breathe new life into a classic muscle car, assuming matching numbers isn’t a priority.

Mopar is making the process easy with a new kit that pairs Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' [NYSE:FCAU] modern 5.7- and 6.4-liter V-8s with models from 1975 and earlier, making it ideal for the original Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Plymouth ‘Cuda and many other makes and models.

Mopar used the kit for two vehicles on its stand at this week’s SEMA show, the Dodge Shakedown Challenger featuring a ’71 body and the Jeep CJ66 with a TJ frame wrapped in a CJ body.

The kits start at $1,795 and include a power distribution center, PCM, engine and chassis harnesses, accelerator pedal and much more, creating essentially a plug ‘n play option for builders. You’ll still need to a source an engine, though.

For the 5.7-liter V-8 you’re looking at $6,070 for a new unit and for the 6.4-liter V-8 you’re looking at $9,335.

A factory calibration is featured on the unlocked PCM. With the kit, the 5.7-liter V-8 delivers 383 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. The 6.4-liter V-8, meanwhile, delivers 485 hp and 472 lb-ft.

The kits are designed for manual transmissions. Automatic transmissions such as the Torqueflite 727 and 904 can be adapted for use, though Mopar states that this is not optimal. There are other upgrades that can be sourced direct from Mopar including a power steering kit ($255), air conditioner ($350) and even exhaust manifolds ($349).
