California-based, Chinese-backed electric car startup Faraday Future has formed a partnership with LG Chem for the supply of lithium-ion batteries to power its cars. LG Chem has already forged ties with 20 automakers including Audi and General Motors Company [NYSE:GM].

But Faraday’s partnership with LG Chem goes beyond just a supply deal. The two are also collaborating on next-generation battery technology, which they claim will be the world’s highest energy density for automotive applications. High density yields capacity and weight benefits.

“LG Chem worked closely with Faraday Future to develop a tailored cell chemistry to optimize the range and safety of our mass production battery hardware,” Faraday’s Vice President of Global Supply Chain, Tom Wessner, said in a statement.

The batteries will be used in Faraday’s modular platform dubbed the VPA. The platform features the now familiar “skateboard” design where the batteries are arranged in a flat configuration in the vehicle floor. The VPA platform was previewed in January in the FFZERO1 supercar concept and is expected to be used initially in a hatch-like car Faraday is developing for a 2017 debut.

The batteries could be outdated soon, though. On Tuesday, Henrik Fisker said he is reviving the Fisker brand for an electric car startup using batteries made with graphene. The advanced material is expected to yield charging, packaging, and weight-saving benefits. Fisker is boasting class-leading range for its batteries.

In related news, Faraday has unveiled its new Formula E car that will be competing in the 2016/2017 season of the electric car series, which kicks off in Hong Kong on Sunday. The car is being fielded by the team Faraday Future Dragon Racing, with drivers Loïc Duval and Jérôme D’Ambrosio.
