Hyundai’s Genesis sedan transforms into the Genesis G80 for the 2017 model year, and along with the name change comes a price rise.

The 2017 Genesis G80 starts at $42,350, which represents a $2,650 premium on the starting price of the 2016 Hyundai Genesis.

The new starting price is for a rear-wheel-drive G80 fitted with the familiar 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6. Opting for all-wheel drive adds $2,500.

Adding the G80’s 420-hp 5.0-liter V-8 will bring the price tag up to $55,500, and this configuration is only offered with rear-wheel drive.

Genesis has frequently mentioned the BMW 5-Series as an alternative to the G80, though pricing for the BMW starts at almost $10k more. Even the rival Cadillac CTS starts at almost $5k more than the G80. And both the BMW and Cadillac come with 4-cylinder engines in base trim.

The G80 is also offered with superb customer assurance. For example, it comes with a 5-year new-vehicle warranty, as well as a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. On top of this there are also complimentary services on offer, typically for 3 years or 36,000 miles. The list includes scheduled maintenance and valet services.

The 2017 Genesis G80 reaches showrooms in September. We’re expecting a G80 Sport to be added to the range at a later date. This model will be come with a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 whose output should lie somewhere between outputs of the 3.8-liter V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 already on offer.
