At next month’s 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Opel will introduce the Mokka X. The vehicle is the updated version of the Mokka subcompact crossover on sale since 2012 and known in these parts as the Buick Encore. It will go on sale in Europe this spring. For readers back home, the updates should appear on the 2017 Encore due towards the end of the year.

The Mokka has proven to be a huge hit for General Motors Company [NYSE:GM]. More than 500,000 examples have been sold across Europe since launch and the latest updates should help continue the trend. Among the changes are revised styling, next-generation infotainment systems, and a new name. You’ll notice a capital X added on the end of the Mokka’s name. This is Opel’s new naming practice for its off-road-oriented models like SUVs and soft-roaders.

The visual updates made to car have been inspired by the latest Opel concepts such as the Monza and GT. There’s a wing-shaped horizontal front grille and headlights with a new shape and eyebrow-style LED daytime running lights. The bumpers also get a more sculpted look and inside the tail-light clusters are some new graphics.

Inside, the dashboard has been completely revised. The design is similar to what we saw in the latest Opel Astra, with a large touchscreen display located in the center stack. There’s also the latest IntelliLink infotainment system as well as OnStar and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Overall, it’s a less-cluttered look that’s much more premium.

Under the hood, you’ll continue to find a range of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The latest diesels are said to be much more refined. Opel even calls them “whisper” diesels. The most potent engine offered in the Mokka X is a turbocharged and direct-injected 1.4-liter four-cylinder delivering 152 horsepower.

It’s not clear what powertrains will be offered in the 2017 Encore. The current model is powered exclusively by a 1.4-liter turbo four good for 138 hp. It’s possible the update will see this replaced by the more potent unit mentioned above.
