The 2014 Detroit Auto Show is now over, at least for the press, so here are some of the highlights of what we saw. The biggest surprise of the show, not to mention one of the most striking, was the Toyota FT-1 concept car, which previews the future styling direction of Toyota and hints at what’s to come for the automaker’s new Supra-like sports car. Fans of the Supra will be glad to know that the same design studio which designed the final MkIV model, America's own Calty Design Research, was also responsible for the new FT-1.

Another hit was the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Initial testing has shown that the car is already significantly faster around a race track than the last Corvette ZR1, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering it was developed alongside the latest Corvette C7.R race car, with which it shares its resemblance.

It wasn’t all about insane sports cars. The all-new 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class also made its world debut in Detroit and once again showed that Mercedes’ new designs, both for vehicle exteriors and interiors, are a step above the competition. The new C-Class really is like the baby S-Class it aims to be.

Another hit was Nissan’s Sport Sedan concept, which previews the automaker’s upcoming 2015 Maxima. We’re quite impressed with the design, which could pass for a four-door GT-R. We just hope the production model it spawns stays true to the concept.

2015 Ford F-150

2015 Ford F-150

Although it’s neither a luxury nor performance vehicle, unless we’re talking SVT-enhanced, the 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck that bowed at Detroit this week is still an impressive vehicle. Thanks to a full aluminum body, the 2015 F-150 weighs around 700 pounds less than its predecessor. Ford, hurry up and bring us a new generation of the SVT Raptor.

One of the coolest cars on show this week was the 2015 BMW M4, the replacement for the M3 Coupe. The car looks downright sinister in this shade of black and should continue to deliver on the race track thanks to its lighter weight and increased engine performance. Yep, we’re talking an extra 100 pound-feet of torque over the old M3 Coupe.

Making its debut not too far from the M4 was one of the car’s direct rivals, the 2015 Lexus RC F. The Japanese sportster  sticks with a good ol’ V-8 engine that will deliver in excess of 450 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and its aerodynamic elements have been inspired by Lexus’ LFA supercar.

Photos don’t do Volvo’s new Concept XC Coupe justice, as the concept’s proportions and details make what appears to be quite a simple design rather beautiful. The good news is that the Concept XC Coupe previews the styling of the automaker’s upcoming 2015 XC90. We can’t wait.

Porsche continues to impress us with its variations of the 911, despite the car pretty much looking like every other 911 of the past 50 years. The latest is the 2014 Porsche 911 Targa, which at the touch of a button sees its roof's center section slide back and stow itself behind the rear seats, keeping the car's sleek lines intact and maintaining the utility so appreciated by 911 owners.

We got our first look up close at the 2015 Ford Mustang in Detroit this week and have plenty of live photos to show you. The clean-sheet design of both the fastback coupe and the convertible variant features a distinct Mustang flavor thanks to the long sculpted hood, short rear deck and tri-bar tail-lights.

That’s it folks, but don’t forget to visit our dedicated hub for our complete 2014 Detroit Auto Show coverage.
