Just last month reports broke claiming Maserati was planning a new mid-engine sports car to take on the likes of the Porsche 911, a car that could even revive the GranSport name.

At the time, Maserati CEO Harald Wester said it was just a proposal and nothing had been confirmed.

Now, in a recent interview with EVO, Wester has revealed even more details on the possible new sports car.

Wester said that he wants the car to be “the most pure expression of Maserati sportiness possible.”

Its purpose would be to serve as a halo for the Maserati brand, which is in the process of a rapid expansion phase that will see the launch of several new models such as the redesigned Quattroporte, production version of the Kubang SUV, and a new mid-size sedan.

Wester, who is also head of Alfa Romeo, explained that he’d like to mimic the success Alfa is experiencing with its 4C, but on a more upmarket level.  This means a carbon fiber monocoque, a mid-engine layout and a V-8 engine spinning the rear wheels for this new Maserati sports car.

Wester even revealed that the car would be about the same length as the Ferrari 458 Italia and that it would feature a dual-clutch transmission, just like the Ferrari. Maserati’s previous MC12 flagship was essentially a reskinned Ferrari Enzo so utilizing one of the Prancing Horse’s latest models would not be without precedent.

The best part is that Wester would want to see the car priced quite aggressively. “I want this car to be better to drive than a 911 Turbo, but I also want it to cost less,” he said. “We won’t limit the production of this car, but I’d like to think that we will sell, let’s say, between 1,500 and 2,000 units a year.”

Though it all sounds like wishful thinking from the Maserati CEO, considering it’s the man at the top doing all the wishing, we may just see a new sports car wearing a trident badge in the near future. If it does get the green light, we wouldn’t expect to see it until 2015 at the earliest.
