Teaser for new Lamborghini SUV Concept

Teaser for new Lamborghini SUV Concept

It’s no secret that Lamborghini is itching for a third product line to join its pair of supercar models, and in less than a week we’ll see just what the automaker from Sant'Agata is planning.

Lamborghini will provide a glimpse of its future model in the form of a concept at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show commencing on April 23.

Today, however, we have an official teaser showing the concept car's silhouette.

Lamborghini's chief Stephan Winkelmann has said a four-door model would fit with Lamborghini's direction, suggesting either a sedan or SUV.

And while a sedan was looking likely following the unveiling of 2008’s Estoque concept car, changing market conditions means Lamborghini is now more interested in an SUV as we found out recently. After all, a quick look at corporate cousin Porsche points up the sales and profit potential in delving into the SUV realm: the Cayenne is a hit, despite its naysayers.

The new Lamborghini SUV could share its underpinnings with the Cayenne--or perhaps the next-generation model. Power could also come from a range of possible engines, though the Gallardo's V-10 is looking most likely.

Unlike Lamborghini's first SUV, the LM002, which evolved out of a project to build a military vehicle for the U.S., the new SUV would be focused on luxury and sporty on-road behavior to suit the tastes of wealthy buyers in the U.S., Russia and China looking for a vehicle with stunning looks, equally stunning performance but with everyday practicality.

Stay tuned for an update.
