2012 Denza New Energy Vehicle (NEV) concept

After recently announcing the establishment of the Denza brand for the Chinese market, German auto giant Daimler, together with its Chinese partner BYD, has now unveiled the Denza New Energy Vehicle (NEV) concept at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show.

The Denza brand is a 50:50 joint venture between Daimler and BYD and is aimed at the launch of a new generation of electric cars in China.

Its new NEV concept previews just one of the vehicles Denza is planning, prototypes for which are already testing on public roads.

It features a four-door coupe bodystyle with suicide-style rear doors, a lounge-like interior, chrome, wood and copper detailing, and full LED headlights. Powering the front wheels is a compact and lightweight electric motor which draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery mounted in the vehicle underbody.

Over 200 engineers and experts from both companies have gathered and combined their strengths at Denza’s main facilities in Shenzhen, China. BYD is providing its expertise in battery technology and electric drive systems, as well as its experience in bringing electric cars to market (it was actually the first in the world to bring to market a mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle).

Daimler, on the other hand, will bring its know-how in premium vehicle design and safety technology.

Denza’s first electric car for public sale is scheduled to be launched in China next year.
