2011 BMW X3 M Sports Package leak
Just last week the 2011 BMW X5 diesel was recalled for a potential steering failure due to a faulty belt tensioner. This week, the 2011 X3 joins the steering-related recall party, but for a faulty steering position sensor. The result, however, would be the same: the sudden loss of power steering assist.
Unlike the mechanical issue with the X5 diesel, however, the X3's problem is electronic--the steering position sensor in the electric power steering (EPS) module is mis-calibrated due to a supplier error, which can result in an error code that disables the EPS system. As a result, the EPS could fail, yet, after a restart cycle, return to functionality and fail again. Without power steering assist, the vehicle can become difficult to control, potentially resulting in an accident.
Affected vehicles include all X3s manufactured between April 27 and June 8, 2011.
The fix is as simple as the problem: BMW will replace the EPS system free of charge at its dealerships starting this month. Affected owners will be notified by the end of the month, but if you think you might own an affected vehicle and haven't received notification, you can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 in reference to campaign ID number 11V341000.
