Burnt Lamborghini Murcielago

Last week’s report of a stolen and burnt Lamborghini Murcielago may have been a little premature as news today confirms that the car wasn’t in fact stolen and wasn’t burnt because of a manufacturer fault. Believe it or not, but the $350,000 supercar went up in flames because of faulty wiring used during the installation of a cheap aftermarket DVD and stereo unit.

According to Jalopnik, the owner of the vehicle was on his way home from having the DVD unit installed when smoke started to emerge from behind the dash. From the image, it’s clear that the fire did in fact start in the front portion of the car and not the rear, where the engine is located. In fact, the engine bay and rear portion appear relatively unharmed.

It just begs the question: If you’re going all out to buy a Lamborghini, why skimp on the stereo?

On a side note, it’s a well known fact that Lamborghinis are prone to catching on fire but at least in this case it wasn’t the car’s fault. As reported on MotorAuthority.com last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has made a recall for 2007 and 2008 model year Lamborghini Murcielago Coupes and Roadsters because of a potential fire risk due to the design of the car’s fuel pump.
