At the Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race next May, Volkswagen will field three Scirocco race car concepts that have been modified to run on compressed natural gas (CNG). At its previous attempt, Volkswagen clinched a one-two victory in the 2.0-liter turbo class and this year the automaker intends on highlighting the performance potential of more environmentally-friendly fuels.

All three Scirocco GT24-CNG coupes are fitted with a 2.0-liter TSI engine powered by natural gas, reducing CO2 emissions by 80 percent over a conventional gasoline engine. The unit is a development of the powerplant that secured class victory last year and sees the power output increased to 330 horsepower.

Early signs for the three cars are promising with the fastest lap time of the notorious Nurburgring coming in at 8m 47.335s. The cars also come with an innovative active electro-hydraulic differential in place of the conventional system. Further developments include a larger braking system than the one on the standard model.

This year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours race will take place over the weekend starting May 12.
