The Nissan Leaf costs several thousand dollars more than the 2012 Mitsubishi i, but a certain type of buyer—especially one who commutes on wide suburban boulevards, or LA-style freeways—is going to appreciate the Leaf's stronger highway response, as well as its wider stance, which helps it fit in a bit better on U.S.
streets highways.
The two models aren't all that different for driving range, but the Leaf's additional ten miles or so might add some peace of mind for longer-distance commuters.
Based on early experience with prototype versions of the upcoming 2012 Tesla Model S, we anticipate this significantly more expensive luxury sedan to be better performing, as well as more refined, than either of those affordable alternatives—including an available range of up to 300 miles.
Finally, an all-electric version of the Ford Focus is anticipated in the first half of calendar-year 2013; this new vehicle will offer the same packaging as other Focus models (minus some cargo versatility), with a range approaching that of the Leaf.
