2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class leaked photo
The next-gen E-Class is due for official debut at Geneva in March

Late last year we captured spy images of the E63 AMG version of the next-generation Mercedes Benz E-Class testing in Germany, then camouflaged prototypes for the new 'Estate' wagon were spotted, and in December we brought you a barely disguised shot of the sedan, followed by blurry leaked official photos. Now we have what appear to be new official photos of the 2010 Mercedes E-Class.

The main differences at first glance include the design of the new grille and headlights. The next E-Class is expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show before going on sale later this year as a 2010 model. The wagon variant will hit the market less than 12 months after the launch of the sedan and is expected to feature a widened C-pillar and a chrome strip across its rear. This trio of new photos also includes a name for each the trim levels: Avant-Garde, Classic and Elegance.

The base E-Class sedan and Estate lineup will be powered by a 184hp (137kW) four-cylinder turbo engine, with the range topping out with a 550hp (410kW) V8 E63 AMG. New to the lineup will be a direct injection petrol V6 model, a 354hp (264kW) diesel V8 version and the all-new hybrid model that’s expected to arrive after 2010. This hybrid will feature the same V6 petrol-electric powertrain as seen in the new S400 BlueHybrid model. A MacPherson strut and multi-link active suspension set-up is also expected to appear, as well as more powerful brakes and a more accurate steering system.

The interior of the 2010 E-Class will hopefully continue Mercedes’ recent return to form in the quality department, and is expected to feature a mix of elements from the S and C-class models including a centrally mounted color screen as well as an in-dash unit between the speedo and tachometer.

Main lights are shaped okay but too small. Fog lights are kinda lame. Rear looks great, wide and powerful.

I bet the turbo inline 4 never makes it to America, but I hope for more diesels, like the squared off headlights.

First the 2nd generation Lexus GS stolen much of the front of the then Merc E class, then the GS changed a bit in the 3rd generation model and went for squarish front light design (but still a son and father type lights). Now seems the Merc E class is following suit as the lexus for the design of the front lights !!!!!

Another exceptional motor car from MB... For the pundits suggesting it looks like a Lexus, Lexus more than likely copied this E Class since it has been in its development stage for several years... Besides, contrary to most opinions, there is NO comparison between the two brands, none what so ever!

I'll keep my 2008 E350. THAT is a gorgeous car. This looks like a Japanese car. I'm sure its fabulously built, but is way boring. I hope the interior is better than the C-Class which is sub standard for a Merc. The CTS is MUCH better inside than the C-Class. The current E, is a classic!

Considering that the Cadillac is a nice design, not a bad idea to incorporate some of that in.

@ xjug1987: the CTS competes directly with the E class, not the C class. it seems to be a common misconception about the CTS that people think it's a competitor with the 3 series and C class. Currently, caddy doesn't have a competitor for that market segment but is looking to add one to its lineup for the '10 model year, i believe. go caddy!

Now with the most current pictures (Dec 10th) I have to say I really like - the old one better.
Something very Japanese looking about this car. The current one is very, very good looking, so I'm surprised they messed with it so much. Same thing with the headlights on the new SL. Why?

  • Wed Dec 10 2008 8:46 PM

    NoNameDenton says

James, it is because the CTS is priced closer to the 3 series then the 5 series. In size the CTS is the size of a 5 series, in price closer to a 3 series.

But James when the new Alpha platform car that is the size of the 3 series comes, the CTS's price should move up. Anyways, I love this car, new headlights are so modern.

Holy cow MB has done it again. How can a respectable car in the 21st century still has a Ye Olde column mounted shifter?! And that steering wheel which is also on other MB models... 1990s Ford Explorer anyone?

The outside is not the most beautiful thing ever but it's OK. However, that steering wheel and that shifter just absolutely kill it for me.

    JSH says

I would say Mercedes is keeping the column shifter because it works. Why would anyone want a console mounted shifter in an automatic? All a console mounted shifter does is take up space that could be used for other things. I suspect that this E-Class actually has real cupholders under that nice little door.

    HECTOR says

Point well taken JSH. Just look at the incredibly elegant solution on the Jaguar XF or that of some Aston Martin models for their gear shifters.

Are you telling me the best MB & BMW are able to come up with is that shifter that immediately screams *Crown Victoria* when I see it?
