Spy shots: Porsche readying Cayman RS

Following the sighting of a Porsche Boxster RS prototype last month come new images of a similar high-performance version of the Cayman testing under the guise of the recently introduced Cayman S ‘Sport’ model. This new variant is also expected to be called an RS and in these latest shots we can clearly see the car’s new carbon-ceramic brake package. However, missing is an expected GT rear wing and rear diffuser.

The new Cayman RS is expected to be introduced as a special run-out edition before the launch of the next-generation model due in 2011. It will be based on the facelifted Cayman lineup, which should first start appearing early next year.

Like the recently revealed 911 facelift, the upgrades planned for the Cayman (and its Boxster sibling) will be minor with only a few revisions to the bodywork. The list of changes includes LED taillights, reshaped headlamps and a new muffler design. Features unique to the RS model would be a plastic rear window and stripped-out interior (designed to save weight), and perhaps even an optional roll cage.

The engine in the RS will likely be an uprated version of the standard Cayman S’ 3.4L flat-six, however with Porsche already adding its VarioCam Plus valve technology last year, any new changes to the powertrain are expected to be minimal.

How about a turbo, or would that be too much competition to the 911.
