Spy Shots: BMW M3 sedan

Up until the unveiling of the BMW M3 Concept at the Geneva Motor Show, most of the auto media buzz surrounded spy images of the coupe testing in various parts of the globe. Little attention was paid towards the upcoming M3 sedan variant, and as these latest spy images reveal, the four-door looks every part as menacing as its two-door sibling.

These shots were taken inside BMW's test facility located near the Nurburgring in Germany. They show that the E90 M3 saloon will sport the same front end styling as the coupe, including the same aggressive front bar, E92 headlights, vented bonnet, wider fenders and a quad tailpipe arrangement.

Under the hood resides the same 420hp 4.0L V8, which will be optional with BMW’s upcoming M DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Both the coupe and sedan are expected to be unveiled in full production trim at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Man! You gotta admit that almost everything that went wrong with teh 7 series - flame surfacing, steering column mounted gearshift (WTF?!), iDrive... - has been corrected in the new 3 series. Aesthetically the 3 series coupe and the M variants are some of the best Beemers ever.

That said I don't care for that huge black rectangle encasing the pipes in the rear - hope it doesn't make it to production - and please make mine any color but silver...

I love the 3 coupe, but the sedan tail lights don't do it for me.

That said, it must be one of the most fun cars around.

I'm pretty sure that black rectange is just camo to hide something. The M3 sedan look great so hopefully BMW will be able to match performance between the coupe and sedan. I wish all 3-series sedans came with the coupe lights, too.

Why? It just seems they are watering down their M line. The M badge use to be an exclusive club and now everything that BMW makes is M'ed.

docdang, what are you talking about? BMW currently only has M versions of the 3, 5, and 6. How is this everthing M\'ed?

I was just griping about what the whole point of having a M3 sedan when you have the M3 coupe. Just seems excessive for the 3 series. Back in the old days the M3 were only coupes. BTW, they also plan to provide a M sport pack for the X5.

BMW would be foolish not to release a sedan version of the M3. They've definately lost some sales to the Audi RS4.

I'd hardly consider an M sport pack a true a M car. But true, there has been too many times when I've seen a regular 5-series wearing the M sport kit and i thought it was the M5 only to be dissappointed later.

The 3 series is a BAADD car anyway and now they're commin with the powerful M3. I can't wait to see who wins in a comparison between the M3 and the upcoming 08 CTS-V. Thats gonna be interesting...

there was a previous M3 sedan in the E36 chassis FYI.

Also BMW has said that it will only produce M versions in RWD cars only so the X5 is not happening. M-Sport package is just a trim and/or handling package. they are not true ///M cars.

The 2009 M3 sedan is looking plenty attractive to me and my 5 y/o son.

when the first generation of M cars came out in the 80's there was an M5 and an M6 as well as the M3.

These cars are not diluting the brand.
