Why should I also consider these?
The current Hyundai Sonata, which was introduced early last model year, has quickly ascended to the top position in the mid-size class, as judged by a number of review sources (including here at The Car Connection).
With its all four-cylinder lineup, the Sonata gets great gas mileage, performs quite well, and includes more features for the money than much of the competition.
The closely related Kia Optima offers a similar package, only with more of a sporty, European-influenced look and feel.
The Honda Accord is also one of the best-rated sedans in this class; compared to most of its peers, the Accord still feels a little sportier and more refined than the rest, and it's plenty entertaining (and smooth) in base four-cylinder form.
The Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion have been among the sportiest choices in this class, both yielding a much more energetic, nimble feel behind the wheel.
The Ford Fusion is due for a full redesign in another year or two, as is the Altima.
And GM is completely redesigning the Chevrolet Malibu; the 2013 Malibu will, like Hyundai and Kia, go to a four-cylinder-only lineup, with an even stronger lineup of standard and optional equipment.
