Why should I also consider these?

As a two-row crossover, the 2012 Ford Edge competes with vehicles both large and small.

The latest Chevy Equinox is an appealing mid-size crossover, with Explorer-like looks and a four-cylinder option good for 32-mpg fuel economy.

The Nissan Murano has a modern appeal, but its CVT turns its V-6 engine into an unhappy moaner.

The Toyota Highlander has four- and six-cylinder engines on tap, as well as hybrid power, but it's primarily a seven-seater, and it's sized to fit that third-row seat even when it's not ordered.

The Subaru Tribeca is a slow seller in a hot segment; it suffers from tight seating in back and a lack of visual presence, though the interior is appealing.

2012 Chevrolet Equinox
A versatile layout, impressive performance, good ride comfort, and reasonable pricing all add up to make the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox a strong value—and a good pick for small families.

2011 Mazda CX-9
The 2011 Mazda CX-9 can carry seven in comfort, but it loves curves more than almost any other roomy crossover.

2011 Subaru Tribeca
With the 2011 Subaru Tribeca, first-class safety credentials and excellent all-weather handling ensure your precious ones are looked after, but if you need more than five seats, we suggest going with a bigger vehicle.

2011 Toyota Highlander
The very family-friendly Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid impress us with their space and versatility, but show no sign of enthusiasm.
