Why should I also consider these?

Now that the Chrysler PT Cruiser and Chevrolet HHR are gone, the Kia Soul faces down just a few likely competitors for your dollars.

The Nissan Cube is the wild tangent in the group, with amoeba curves and a piece of shag carpeting on the dash.

It's not quick either, and functionally it's a step down with its side-swinging tailgate and less efficient use of space.

The Scion xB has a Cruiser-ish look now, and it's bigger, but we've been disappointed with its seating and the size jump that stole most of its JDM charm.

If you're looking at a Soul, you might check out Hyundai's statement-making Veloster hatchback, with its one driver-side door and two passenger-side doors.

It's slick and has connectivity Kia's hatchback doesn't, but it's more sporty in original intent where the Soul's more MPV-ish.

2012 Hyundai Veloster
The 2012 Hyundai Veloster starts with niche appeal, but its impressive handling and strong, high-value feature set should play well to the mainstream.

2012 Nissan Cube
For those motivated by style and fashion—yet still needing a healthy dose of practicality—the Cube hits the right buttons; practical types might find it hard to get past some packaging issues, though.

2012 Scion xB
Trendy or odd, the Scion xB jams plenty of space and versatility into its compact footprint.

2011 Chevrolet HHR
The 2011 Chevrolet HHR stands out with its retro exterior, but it's lackluster in most other respects.
