The competitive set for the 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe really runs the gamut, spanning from budget tuner specials up to sophisticated luxury coupes.
At the low end of the price spectrum is the front-wheel-drive Scion tC, which was redesigned last year and prioritizes looks over performance.
The Honda Accord Coupe is a good-looking front-driver, with sporty handling and good fuel economy, but it's not nearly as sporty as the Genesis Coupe.
American muscle like the Ford Mustang V-6 and Chevrolet Camaro V-6 hit the heart of the Genesis Coupe market, and in terms of features for the money, these three models are actually now quite close.
The Hyundai's 2.0T engine is a four-cylinder, but it's not much better in gas mileage than either of the pony cars.
The Nissan 370Z might be considered an alternative by some, but it's a different kind of beast--quite cramped, and too harsh for the daily commute by most standards.
Meanwhile, at the high end of the Genesis Coupe's class is the Infiniti G37; in terms of price and prestige, it's far off; but take a close look at the Hyundai's interior detailing and refinement and it's surprisingly close.
