Why should I also consider these?

The Honda Fit used to be a no-brainer within this class, but competition has become much tighter over the past year or two.

Last year the Ford Fiesta arrived, aiming at the same crowd that desires a smaller car that's a little sportier in feel.

The Fiesta arguably looks better than the Fit, and it has responsive six-speed dual-clutch gearbox available, but its interior isn't nearly as roomy or versatile as that of the Fit.

In hatchback form, the Nissan Versa carries over to 2012 relatively unchanged; it rides and handles like a larger, heavier car, lacking the Fit's nimble feel.

The all-new Chevrolet Sonic offers impressive interior refinement and comfort, but it lacks the Fit's packaging magic and nimble feel.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Yaris is all-new this year, and Hyundai edges more strongly into this segment with its new Accent, which gets a direct-injection engine good for up to 40 mpg on the highway.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is neither subsonic nor supersonic—but it's a good, sound choice and a world better than the Aveo it replaces.

2012 Ford Fiesta
You could do better if you most value space and comfort, but the 2012 Ford Fiesta packs in a lot of style and substance.

2012 Hyundai Accent
Do Americans want small cars with more room and great gas mileage? The 2012 Hyundai Accent is betting they do--and so are we.

2012 Nissan Versa
The 2012 Nissan Versa is a reasonably comfortable, well-equipped new car for used-car money—but if you're a stickler for the details it can feel as cheap as it is.

2012 Toyota Yaris
The 2012 Toyota Yaris is fuel-efficient in the city without hybrid hardware, and it has an nicely appointed interior that feels cheerful but not cheapskate; but its weak performance and highway refinement aren't up to current class standards.
