Rather than work on the car’s mechanicals, Rides has chosen to update the interior

The annual extravaganza of excess that is the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas is gearing up to run from November 4-7. The latest entrant to the show floor is a custom Hyundai Genesis Sedan kitted out with an absurd amount of technology, including no fewer than three computers and its own high-speed mobile Wi-Fi Internet connection.

Housing two Mac Mini computers, a MacBook Air, iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, high-speed Wi-Fi Internet connection and movie theater-quality surround sound, the Rides Genesis aims at providing a sort of mobile command and entertainment center in one package.

"This Genesis perfectly suits the mobile executive, with multiple Mac computers and its own mobile Wi-Fi network," said Ben Harris, associate publisher, of Rides magazine. "All of the modifications compliment the Genesis' natural attributes and emphasize the sleek look and luxury interior. To promote the vehicle, Rides will be handing out 5,000 'Digital Genesis' iTunes cards via the car's built-in Wi-Fi system at the show.

In the car's trunk, where one of the Mac Minis resides, there is also a 20-inch monitor with a motorized tray for the mouse and keyboard. Both rear seat passengers also have their own computers - one a Mac Mini, the other the MacBook Air. For presentations or other demonstrations that require a larger audience, the trunk-mounted computer and larger screen offer a view for many.

Like all SEMA concepts, it's not stricly practical, and is definitely a bit over the top, but it is a preview of a possible future for high-tech mobile workstations. As Michael Deitz, manager, Product Development, Hyundai Motor America, put it, "Adding state-of-the-art connectivity and computing power to existing technology like navigation, Bluetooth and satellite radio, this Rides Genesis offers a glimpse into the future of hi-tech luxury."
