...In government testing, the Yaris sedan scored four out of five stars for frontal- and side-impact protection for all occupants. In frontal crash tests, the three- and five-door hatchbacks scored five stars for driver protection and four stars for passenger protection; side-impact tests netted five stars for front passenger protection and three stars for those in the rear. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Yaris sedan its highest score of "Good" for frontal- and side-impact protection for all occupants. ...Interior All Yaris trims get standard air conditioning and a CD stereo with auxiliary and USB jacks. In this version, Toyota dumped the controversial center-mounted gauges in favor of a conventional layout. L trims have four speakers, manual windows and a fold-down rear bench seat. LE and SE models get power windows, a six-speaker stereo, 60/40-split folding rear seats, steering-wheel audio controls, and soft-touch dash and sill inserts. (Those inserts are hard plastic in the L.) On top of that, SE models add cruise control — a stand-alone option on the LE — sport seats with more...

CarGurus' Review for 2011 toyota yaris

...The 2011 Toyota Yaris offers a comfortable and affordable commuter car with impressive fuel economy numbers and standard safety features.
However, when pushed to highway speeds, the small engine feels the strain, particularly when outfitted with the optional automatic transmission.
Although Toyota keeps the price low with few standard features inside,
adding options packages may raise the price high enough for the Yaris to get lost among competitors with more pep, more standard features and more cargo room...

...The Yaris' steering complements all this. SE models have a different electric power steering program that Toyota says offers less power assistance and a little more road feel than the L and LE. Having driven them all, I can say I did notice a slight difference in feedback between the SE and other models, but feedback is generally good for all trim levels. I doubt anyone would find the SE too much work to drive. Considering its segment, the Yaris is quiet on the highway. Mileage A major reason buyers choose small cars is because they get better mileage. What follows is a comparison of mileage...

2012 Toyota Yaris Overview
Source: CarGurus

...The LE ups the goodies to include power windows and doors, audio controls on the steering wheel, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a higher-end sound system. The SE, besides its tighter suspension and steering, has 16-inch alloy wheels, sports seats and higher-grade cloth upholstery, Some of the more impressive changes for 2012 came with the cabin. The materials inside are better, and so is the design. Reviewers give unanimous thumbs up to one major addition by subtraction. No longer are gauges for the Yaris situated awkwardly on a center console. They have been moved to the front dash...

Why should I also consider these?

Toyota has a rock-solid reputation for reliability and low running costs in this segment, but with a bottom-line price of $17,160, our Yaris SE is by no means in the same category as a base ($11,750) Nissan Versa.

The Versa remains the lowest-priced U.S.

vehicle, though hatchback versions cost a bit more.

The Versa's hard plastics and lack of refinement make it a step behind much of the rest of this class, though, so what you get is what you pay for.

Competing against the Hyundai Accent, Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, and Honda Fit—all of which are either more engaging to drive or simply offer more features and performance for less money—it's hard to get very excited about the Yaris from a value standpoint.

The Accent has a much stronger, direct-injection engine that's perhaps more fuel-efficient.

The Ford Fiesta is also a little coarse and noisy, but it's a lot of fun to drive.

And among this group, the Mazda2 is the most enjoyable from behind the wheel, with a nimble, tossable feel.

Those who want the most refined car in this class should go for the Sonic; with the 1.4T engine it's strong, sure, and relatively quiet and, maneuverability and parking ease aside, it feels positively like a larger car.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is neither subsonic nor supersonic—but it's a good, sound choice and a world better than the Aveo it replaces.

2012 Ford Fiesta
You could do better if you most value space and comfort, but the 2012 Ford Fiesta packs in a lot of style and substance.

2012 Hyundai Accent
Do Americans want small cars with more room and great gas mileage? The 2012 Hyundai Accent is betting they do--and so are we.

2012 Mazda MAZDA2
With a zippy driving feel and good real-world gas mileage, the 2012 Mazda2 really stands out among entry-level vehicles.

2012 Nissan Versa
The 2012 Nissan Versa is a reasonably comfortable, well-equipped new car for used-car money—but if you're a stickler for the details it can feel as cheap as it is.
