...A five-speed manual is standard and a five-speed automatic is optional. We recorded a 0-60 time of 9.1 seconds with this engine connected to the manual. Fuel economy drops significantly, with a 22/30/25 rating for both transmissions. Safety: The Corolla comes standard with antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. Notably, only the XRS has four-wheel disc brakes; other Corollas have rear drums. In government crash testing, the Corolla earned four out of five stars for its protection of occupants in frontal...

...The 2010 Toyota Corolla will not impress you, unless you’re looking for the best example of bland out there.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and if a car is a car is a car to you, the Corolla is definitely that.
However, it’s probably best to wait a year and see if Toyota refines its abysmal electronic steering...

...Affordable cars have begun to include things like damped glove box doors. The Corolla's flops open and bounces, giving a cheap impression. The ventilation controls, though simple to understand and use, have a cheap feel as well. Finally, the build construction could be better. I don't usually focus on gaps between parts and panels, but it's hard to ignore when they're inconsistent, as they were on either side of our steering wheel's horn pad. This is the kind of thing Toyota used to do well — arguably better than anyone else in its price range. The competition has improved. The Corolla...

...But that's where the highlights end. One of the Corolla's big disappointments is its bland, somewhat roughshod interior. While Toyota has always been one of the leaders in terms of interior quality no matter the segment, the Corolla's plastics look and feel cheap, and the controls are awkward. In short, nothing impressed. The XRS doesn't get an altered interior, although my test car's all-black interior hid some of the flaws I noticed in other Corollas. Quality isn't on par with the Civic, and the new Mazda3 has both beat in terms of interior design, with its swooping lines and innovative...

...locks and keyless entry Optional six- or eight-speaker audio system Available navigation system Under the Hood The Corolla's base engine is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder, paired to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The XRS has a more powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder, mated to either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission, which can be manually shifted when placed in the "S" position. The XRS also comes with a sport-tuned suspension, which includes a front strut tower brace. Four disc brakes are standard on the XRS, while other Corollas come with...

Why should I also consider these?

The 2010 Toyota Corolla is competent in most areas, but strong rivals like the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, and Mazda3 are similar in price and perform better overall.

The Hyundai Elantra is an especially good value compared to the Toyota, as is Hyundai's larger Sonata when compared with the $22,000 Corolla XRS.

The Nissan Sentra has better style and a better backseat, while the Mazda3 is the zippiest of all, especially as the MazdaSpeed3.

Other vehicles worth a look include the Mitsubishi Lancer and the Honda Fit.

2008 Hyundai Elantra
The 2008 Hyundai Elantra doesn’t have a lot of personality, but it’s the undeniable practical choice.

2008 Mazda MAZDA3
The 2008 Mazda 3 is easily one of the best compact cars for sale in the United States.

2008 Nissan Sentra
The 2008 Nissan Sentra is worth a drive, but its CVT may turn off some buyers.
