2008 suzuki sx4 Professional Edmunds Review

...The front-drive SX4 Sport sedan fares a bit better in this area, earning a 23/31 rating with the automatic and 23/30 with the manual. Still, all those numbers are at the bottom of the barrel in terms of subcompact sedans and hatchbacks. Safety: Every 2008 Suzuki SX4 comes with antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags and head-protecting side curtain airbags for all outboard passengers. Traction and stability control, an unusual feature for this class, is standard on SX4 Touring models only. Interior Design and Special Features: The Suzuki SX4's cabin has a clean design with large...

2008 Suzuki SX4 Professional Review

...The SX4 has a standard 2.1-liter, 143-horsepower, in-line four-cylinder engine. The new Corolla comes with a 1.8-liter, 132-horsepower, in-line four-cylinder engine. So what? We're talking about economy cars here. Most people who buy economy cars aren't looking for racetrack performance. For them, winning means stopping at the gas pump as seldom as possible. In that regard, the SX4 turns in a credible performance with 23 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. But even that performance is relatively underwhelming in the increasingly fuel-efficient world of small cars. The new...

Flash Drive: 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sport

...I was impressed by the SX4 Sport’s little-yet-large presence, confirmed inside by a clean dash layout, tight fit & finish, and ergonomic control placements: everything fell to hand. Turning the key and hitting the gas confirmed my suspicions: This utilitarian sedan possesses a sporty undertone that can slap a smile on your face, all for around 15 grand. With such a strong list of standard features on the SX4 Sport I have to agree with the ad copywriters: Look out Toyota and Honda, there’s a new econoboxer in town. – Eric BellscheidtA surprisingly good looking car, the new Suzuki SX4...

2008 Suzuki SX4 Professional Review

...And now comes the SX4 Sedan, which has more room and rides a bit better, but has front-wheel drive. AWD may be an eventual option. The SX4 Sedan, a "100 percent" product of Japan, according to the window sticker, offers a remarkable amount of content for the money. The engine is the 2.0-liter, 143-horsepower four-cylinder, which just keeps getting better. Transmission on the test car is a reasonably smooth-shifting five-speed manual, with an automatic as an option. EPA-rated mileage of the test car was 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and that's using the more realistic 2008 EPA rating system...

...owners and critics agree that the 2008 Suzuki SX4 steps up to the plate and delivers in terms of handling and sporty feel on the open road and around curves. For someone wanting a little fun behind the wheel without breaking the wallet, the 2008 SX4 provides a good-looking alternative. Both sedan and hatchback come with ABS brakes, dual front-side and side curtain airbags, full power features, and a CD/MP3 player. Both can be outfitted with either the Convenience Package (cruise control, leather trim) or the Touring Package (foglights, rear spoiler, CD changer, keyless ignition). While the...

2008 Suzuki SX4 Professional Review

...A pickup truck ahead of us swerved into the median in a cloud of tire smoke and dirt, revealing a large bale of something - likely insulation - sitting in front of us in the middle of the lane. We stood on the brakes, swung the wheel left, then right, a proper avoidance maneuver. From the way the SX4 responded, the moves were clearly well within the range of its capabilities. My description of the ride would be "on the stiff side," and a bit busy around town. On the highway, it wasn't fazed by diagonal expansion grids or New England potholes. The storage space behind the rear seat will take a...

2008 Suzuki SX4 Professional Review

...Total price is $15,895 with the manual transmission, and $16,995 with the automatic. Our test vehicle was the top version, the Touring model. With manual gearbox, the Touring model is $16,895, and with the automatic, $17,995. It includes the upgrades from the Convenience package, along with the upgraded, 380-watt audio system, which nine speakers and a six-disc CD changer; fog lights; a rear spoiler; and electronic stability control with traction control. The stability control system is not offered as stand-alone option, however. My tester came with the manual, which was easy to shift and...

2008 Suzuki SX4 Professional Review

...Even with the backseat raised, cargo volume is a respectable 9.5 cubic feet — 22 cubic feet with the seats folded in the Crossover. The SX4 Sport's trunk is a sizable 14.3 cubic feet, which is larger than the cargo area of the Civic, Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla. Under the Hood The SX4 uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 143 horsepower. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual; a four-speed automatic is optional. All-wheel drive is standard with either gearbox in the Crossover. Sport models get the same transmission choices, but with front-wheel drive. Estimated mileage is 21/28...

2008 Suzuki SX4 Professional Review

...My soon-to-be-driving teen is of the opinion that any car would be better than no car, though, so he said he would be willing to overlook just about any shortcoming (all the way up to wooden tires, I suspect). The price is definitely right, with the base model starting at just over $14K. A couple thousand more adds cruise control, a heated outside mirror and steering-wheel-mounted controls for the radio and cruise settings. Forget the automatic transmission, though - that will cost you another $1,100, bringing your price tag in line with several other models in this class. I think even the...

2008 Suzuki SX4 Professional Review

...The same goes for a telescoping steering wheel; it would have allowed me to pull the wheel closer for a more comfortable arm angle. The view forward from the front seats is great, but the large A-pillar on the right side is in the driver's line of sight when checking for pedestrians and cars at intersections. It obstructs the view despite the narrow, triangular window in it. While the cabin has some downmarket elements, like release levers for the fuel door and trunk that protrude from a roughly cut hole in the floor carpet, most interior trim pieces are better finished. This puts the SX4...
