...GLX trim offers a desirable content package: Besides the GL bits, you get remote keyless entry; power windows, mirrors and locks; alloy wheels; a tachometer and cruise control. The only options for these models are floor mats and an automatic transmission. The GLX+ wagon comes with a power moonroof, antilock brakes, a combination CD/cassette player and two exclusive exterior colors. The Esteem's exterior styling might not gouge the sensibilities (in the way that the Focus does), but the mild-mannered may find it pleasant. The interior is user-friendly and solidly constructed, but it doesn''t...

...offer consumers a good value at a time when lots of competitors are hiking their prices or offering similarly equipped models for thousands of dollars more. Sure, it's value, but it' ind of like clipping a coupon for a grocery item that you really don't want. I had that experience yesterday in the store with a coupon for 'wet or dry' toilet paper. I studied it and for the life of me couldn't figure out when I'd ever want to wet my toilet paper. So I threw the coupon away. I have the same nagging feeling about the Suzuki. He: Are you trying to say they should rename it the Suzuki Wet and Dry?...

...The GLX adds power windows, locks and mirrors. All Esteem models have a Clarion stereo system with an in-dash CD player. The top-of-the-line GLX+ adds a cassette player to the CD unit. Passenger volume totals 85.9 cubic feet, and trunk capacity measures 12.1 cubic feet. Under the Hood The Esteem?s 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine develops 122 horsepower and teams with either a standard five-speed-manual or optional four-speed-automatic transmission. The automatic gearbox is standard on the GLX+ sedan. Safety Antilock brakes are standard on the GLX+ sedan but are unavailable on other models...

...Air conditioning is standard on the GL, as well as power steering, rear window defogger, remote fuel door and trunk releases, dual mirrors and a fold-down rear seat. New for 1996 on the GL are body color bumpers. GLX models add power windows, locks and mirrors; as well as a newly upgraded cassette stereo, split-folding rear seat, tachometer and larger tires. An ABS option package is available for the GLX, and it includes cruise control. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, the Esteem isn't very big inside or out. It offers about as much value as a Toyota Tercel DX sedan, which is to say, not...

...Bump and drag is closer to the truth. Praise: Vehicle construction and presentation. The Esteem is a solid little car, excellent for commuting, but its tiny engine performs better with five-speed manual transmission. Ride, acceleration and handling: Very good small-car ride, even for rear-seat passengers. Excellent econocar acceleration (0 to 60 mph in about 9.3 seconds) when equipped with five-speed manual transmission and when the air conditioner is shut off. Lousy acceleration, 0 to 60 in eternity, with automatic transmission and the air conditioner working. Head-turning quotient: I'm a...

...FIT AND FINISH Although the Esteem never left me stranded, it ranks as the worst car I have driven this yea . If I had just spent nearly $16,000 on a car, I would not want to hear a strange creaking noise in the steering column. The dealer failed to fix it. I also heard a virtual symphony of rattles and squeaks when driving over rough terrain, such as railroad crossings and speed bumps. These things did little to inspire confidence. However, I like the design of the Esteem. This is an attractive, almost classy looking small car. It's comfortable. It's roomy. It's versatile. By comparison it...

...One of the more difficult engineering tricks is to get a good ride and quiet operation out of a small, light car. Suzuki does it by sticking with the known characteristics of MacPherson struts, coil springs and four-wheel independent suspension. New is an advanced engine-mount technology that produces a smoother, quieter operating mode. The package achieves a level generally associated with bigger automobiles. If you want to go upstream to the GLX, a number of power items like windows, locks and outside mirrors become standard equipment. Also available is an optional anti-lock braking system...
