...The WRX has a revised version of the 2.5GT's engine that cranks out 265 hp and 244 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual is the lone transmission choice. Its 0-60 time in testing was a snappy 5.2 seconds, while fuel economy estimates are 18/25/21. The WRX STI gets even more boost for 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. With its standard six-speed manual, the STI achieves fuel economy of 17/23/19 and, more importantly, reaches 60 mph in a blazing 4.5 seconds. Safety: Standard on all Impreza models are antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and active...

...A six-speed transmission could provide a shorter 1st gear and easier launches. Real-World Attributes As I've said, this is a very comfortable car. One passenger even remarked as much — unprompted. It's not just the seats, either; I never winced when going over bumps on Chicago's horrible roads, and expansion joints on the interstate didn't bash my spine. I was, however, able to sense when the pavement changed, through the steering wheel. I don't know how Subaru managed to make the WRX provide feedback to the driver, offer sporty handling and still provide a smooth ride, but I'm glad it did...

CarGurus' Review for 2010 subaru impreza

...Though a competent commuter and certainly an attractive value, the 2010 Subaru Impreza tries to impress too many disparate tastes.
This results, naturally, in a trim lineup that does little or nothing to overwhelm the senses. Seriously, does anyone want to drive an Impreza just for the sheer joy of it?...

...6-speed man. EPA mileage (city/hwy., mpg) 20/27 (man.); 20/26 (auto) 19/24 18/25 17/23 Required fuel Regular Premium Premium Premium Source: Automaker and EPA data My test car's all-wheel drive worked flawlessly all week, delivering slip-free acceleration over considerable snow and ice. The Impreza employs three all-wheel-drive systems: Stick-shift models short of the STi distribute power continuously to both axles through a center viscous coupling , while models with an automatic transmission have a more advanced center differential that electronically doles out the engine power. Either way...

...alloy wheels Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter Heated front seats 10-speaker surround-sound system Back to top WRX The WRX is the sportiest Impreza, competing with the Mazdaspeed3 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. It's powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The suspension is tuned to have high-rate springs, large-diameter stabilizer bars and dedicated damping force tuning for sharper handling response. Standard equipment includes tailpipe tips for WRX four-door sedans, and aluminum-alloy pedal covers, including one for the driver's footrest. The WRX is available in both...

...I could also push the wheel down fairly low, which is where I prefer it. Once I'd adjusted everything, all of the controls — the steering wheel, pedals, console shifter and buttons for the air conditioning and audio system — could still be operated naturally. While the driving position is good, materials quality could be better. The fit and finish in the 2.5GT is acceptable, but the trim pieces themselves aren't the most modern-looking; their surfaces are hard, and many have a shiny appearance. While this may have cut it a few years ago, it doesn't today. Some details are also overlooked...

Why should I also consider these?

Two cars with similar attributes to the 2010 Subaru Impreza are the Suzuki SX4 and Volkswagen Golf/Jetta.

The SX4 is available in a range of body styles, including both a hatch and sedan, and is the lowest-priced vehicle with all-wheel drive.

The Golf and Jetta miss out on all-wheel drive, but they have a quality feel and are loaded with safety features.

The Toyota Matrix is a good alternative, with available all-wheel drive, a relatively spacious interior, and a good ride.

However, safety in the Matrix is no match for the Impreza, with side airbags, for example, coming as an option.

Both the Mazda3 and Mitsubishi Lancer are strong contenders, both featuring edgier handling and a sharper feel, though engine and road noise on these cars can be a bit intrusive.

2010 Mazda MAZDA3
The 2010 Mazda3 engages drivers like few other compact cars, though a little more room and less noise couldn't hurt.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer
The Mitsubishi Lancer might be positioned and priced as an economy car, but with the right equipment, it can feel like a lot more.

2010 Suzuki SX4
The 2010 Suzuki SX4 delivers cheerful refinement at a remarkably low price; its only Achilles' heel is its fuel efficiency.

2010 Toyota Matrix
Not quite a utility vehicle, but a little more robust than a no-frills hatchback, the 2010 Toyota Matrix offers an appealing combination of frugality and versatility.
