...Interior Design and Special Features: The new xD sports a functional, well-built and certainly hip interior design. Unlike the new xB and the outgoing xA, the gauges are where they belong -- in front of the driver instead of in the dash center -- but the speedometer and tachometer are placed in the same circular pod and run toward each other. Imagine a clock where the minute and hour hands move in opposite directions. The tach in particular is hard to read and we once again must say to Scion: "We understand being different is your thing, but just leave the gauges alone." Other controls are...

...Still, shifting it in urban traffic was fun. The lever fell nicely to hand and moved with something approaching grace. In city driving, the front-wheel-drive xD felt zippy, confident and competent. It would have been nice if Toyota's engineers had given the same attention to the clutch that they gave to the five-speed gearbox. The good feel and ease of movement in the shifter was absent in the clutch, which felt rubbery and uncertain. It was like dancing with someone who was all rhythm and fire on the right side of her body, but who was completely absent of passion and timing on the left. I...

...The aft seat is comfortable for two, and the boxy shape provides plenty of headroom both front and rear. I was able to achieve 32 mpg in combined city and highway driving in the xD, but there’s not a lot of power available. This newest Scion works well as efficient, useful transportation, but with the price of our test car exceeding $16,000, the xD is venturing out of the first-car-buyer territory. – Perry SternThe Scion xD is a great example of how good entry-level cars have become. Priced at $16,444 with stability control and a security system, the xD has an unusual style that provides...

...The Scion xD can easily cruise at 80 mph down the highway, but it's one of the smallest cars on the road. The electric power steering is too sensitive, causing the xD to weave from side to side at the slightest movement, and it feels disconnected to the road. When I was trying to adjust the stereo, I found myself swerving and swearing at the same time. The stereo is difficult to use, as the control knob, which worked like a joystick, never seemed to find the right song, and every time I reached to my right, the car turned slightly to the left -- for a second, I thought it was an inadvertent...

...A first aid kit, for instance, is standard, as is a chrome exhaust tip, multi-reflector halogen lights, and a choice of three wheel-cover designs.Inside is a stylish look, with a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, amber instrument panel illumination, front sport bucket seats, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, air conditioning, a digital clock, and a six-speaker Pioneer AM/FM stereo system with a CD player and iPod connectivity. The xD also comes with a sliding and reclining rear seat, which is borrowed from the five-door Yaris. The Scion is also available with a...

...The xD's standard Pioneer stereo includes an auxiliary jack for MP3 players. It displays track listings, and drivers can adjust the volume or skip ahead using steering-wheel controls. An optional stereo upgrade includes a faceplate capable of displaying pictures and short video clips. Standard features include remote keyless entry, air conditioning, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Under the Hood A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine is standard. With its 128 horsepower, it offers a much-needed boost over the xA's 103-hp, 1.5-liter engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a...

...two glove boxes, driver's side change and/or parking pass holder, and iPod port and auxiliary audio jack in the instrument cluster. A small tray -- emphasis on small -- under the steering wheel will hold only a few pens -- not easily seen or reached. The xD with automatic starts at $15,350, a respectable price considering it includes power windows/mirrors/locks (no power seats, which aren't available on any Scion), air conditioning, cruise control, rear-window defroster, AM/FM/CD with six-speakers, tilt steering and remote keyless entry. Only factory installed option is stability...

...The five-speed manual worked nicely, though the shifter was somewhat rubbery. Fuel mileage was excellent. DRIVABILITY: The xD gets the job done, but drivability is just adequate. The steering is numb, and the handling is modest. For a car aimed at young drivers, xD should be more engaging and fun to drive. Road irregularities throw it off course, and cross winds blow it around. A decent level of safety gear comes standard, including side-curtain airbags, antilock brakes with force distribution and panic-stop assist, and seatbelts with force limiters and pre-tensioners. Electronic Stability...

...Front disc and rear drum brakes include standard antilock braking. They stop the xD with surprising efficiency. Ride & Handling Like most economy cars, the xD has an independent front suspension with a stabilizer bar . The rear is semi-independent , a typical economy-car setup that prioritizes cost savings over performance. In part because the cars they serve are so small, these suspensions can still deliver a fun driving experience. Such is the case in the xD. Body roll seems well managed; even in tight corners, the car retains its poise, and the steering feels naturally weighted and...
