...while the turbocharged 2.0-liter four in the GXP models kicks the power output up to 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard for either engine, while a five-speed automatic is optional. Straight-line performance is adequate with the base engine -- it goes from zero to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds for manual-equipped cars. The GXP is much more thrilling; in our testing, it went from zero to 60 mph in a scant 5.8 seconds. According to the EPA, expected fuel economy for the base Solstice is 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. The GXP, despite the added...

...we'd insist that the guy who designed the front locks on the top should have done the one in back. It's difficult to open, even harder to close. The Solstice roadster offers a 2.4-liter, 173-h.p. 4 that's adequate for cruising, but the GXP coupe slips in a 2-liter, 260-h.p. turbo 4 with an attitude. Mileage is a respectable 19 m.p.g. city/28 m.p.g. highway with a notchy 5-speed manual. Automatic runs $995 and gets 1 more m.p.g. on the highway. The turbo 4 gives the GXP the power the roadster should have had to match its dramatic styling. Very good handling, too, thanks to stability and...

CarGurus' Review for 2009 pontiac solstice

...While the 2009 Solstice has the performance and the looks to be a solid competitor with the Miata, it still lacks the precision and practicality of its cousin.
It would be nice to have the power of the turbocharged 2.0 without having to suffer the perhaps too-aggressive suspension of the GXP.
Rumors of a re-design in 2011 will hopefully put this roadster a little closer to perfection...

...173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 167 pounds-feet of torque Standard five-speed manual transmission; optional five-speed automatic Four-wheel-independent suspension with forged-aluminum control arms and monotube shock absorbers Safety For 2009, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are standard on all Solstice trim levels. The Solstice doesn't have side-impact airbags, and the car has not been crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Standard four-wheel-disc antilock brakes Standard electronic stability system Solstice GXP Like other Pontiac GXP...

...The switches are perfectly placed for anyone with arms just two feet long. People with elbows, however, will have trouble reaching them. While the curvy exterior lines give the Solstice a crisp and unique look, the same bubbly lines in the cabin don't translate as well. It makes the interior look like a giant chunk of cheap plastic. The thin plastic over the passenger airbag looks as if you could punch a hole through it with only a few pounds of pressure. The touch points are hard and trying to figure out what Pontiac was thinking with this interior is even harder. There's no flow or logic...

...Pontiac's original literature said the company would offer an aftermarket storage box. Well, good luck finding a Pontiac dealer now. We tried stashing it on our front lawn. On another day, it went in the back of the family pickup truck. Moreover, if you're heading out for a drive without the roof, you'd better trust your weatherman. In my case, the only one I trust is NECN's Matt Noyes. On this day, he'd predicted a chance of late-afternoon showers. Sure enough, they arrived at 3:45 p.m. as we raced (in a matter of speaking) home to replace our lid. The rear hatch window opens to access...

Why should I also consider these?

The Honda S2000 may be the closest competitor to the Solstice GXP; it brings an incredibly rev-happy 237-horsepower, 2.2-liter VTEC four-cylinder and six-speed manual.

Though it doesn't match the GXP for straight-line performance, it beats it for the tactile experience.

The Miata covers the basics with a certain tactile charm that the Solstice lacks; the shift action, very direct steering feel, and sound of the modest engine powering the balanced, lightweight roadster is still unbeatable.

The torquey Nissan 350Z Roadster is also worth a look for those who seek V-6 grunt above all else.

Compared to the Solstice, the mechanically identical Saturn Sky includes more standard features at a higher price, although styling is quite different—and perhaps superior—on the Sky.
