...Other cargo options (available as individual additions) for all three trims include a sliding cargo organizer to compartmentalize the storage area and a retractable cargo cover to hide the contents from view.Technology in the Xterra is somewhat lean. A 2010 review noted that, despite poor rear visibility, no backup camera is available, nor has one been added to the lineup of available features for 2011. The X and S trims come with an AM/FM/CD with six speakers. Higher-end technology is standard only in the Pro-4X, including Bluetooth technology for hands-free phone use, a Rockford Fosgate...

2012 Nissan Xterra Overview

...The front seats are comfortable, but the rear seats leave a lot to be desired. This vehicle is better suited for hauling cargo than a lot of passengers—all passenger seats can be folded for storage, and the S and Pro 4X come with an easy-clean cargo area. With the second row folded, the car has up to 65.7 cubic feet of storage. The Xterra's ride is generally smooth with plenty of pickup on pavement, but this SUV is really made for off-road, especially the Pro 4X. Because it’s built like a truck and has gas-filled Bilstein shocks and almost 10 inches of clearance, you will have no problem...

2011 nissan xterra Professional Edmunds Review

...In Edmunds brake testing, an Xterra Pro-4X came to a stop from 60 mph in 131 feet -- an average result for an off-roading SUV. The Nissan Xterra has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash testing procedures. However, its 2010 ratings (which aren't comparable to the new methodology) were four out of five stars in a front collision and five stars for side crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Xterra its highest rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset and side tests and a second-best rating of "Acceptable" in the roof strength test...

...I've got enough jobs to juggle as it is. Switching a car into four-wheel drive just to get out of my barely icy and slightly inclined driveway, then switching back out again when on dry city streets, somehow doesn't top my priority list. On a couple of occasions (namely, highway driving in adverse road conditions and three kids in the back), I opted out of the Xterra for my own little all-wheel-drive car with winter tires because I felt uncomfortably floaty and disconnected from the road in the Xterra. The Xterra Pro-4X that I drove got an estimated 15/20 mpg city/highway. That's with the...

Why should I also consider these?

There are definitely fewer hardy, off-road-worthy vehicles than there were a decade ago, but the models remaining are more rugged and trail-focused than ever.

The current Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has msintained this model's reputation, with very boxy, rugged styling combined with phenomenal off-road ability, and for 2012 it gets an all-new (and much more refined) powertrain: Chrysler's strong Pentastar V-6 and five-speed automatic.

Like the Xterra, Toyota's FJ Cruiser hasn't changed significantly in many years; it's not at all a family vehicle but appeals to either young people or purists who want off-road capability.

For families who also need off-road ability, the Toyota 4Runner Trail model might be a better alternative than the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

Finally, if you have a higher budget and want a little more luxury with that true off-road ability, check out the Land Rover LR4.

2012 Jeep Wrangler
The off-road-hardy 2012 Jeep Wrangler is still fine-tuned for adventurous weekend warriors, but it's become a little more tolerable for the commute.

2012 Land Rover LR4
The 2012 Land Rover LR4 is a burly off-roader with a luxurious, high-class interior; just don't expect it to handle or perform like a car or crossover.

2012 Toyota 4Runner
The brawny 2012 Toyota 4Runner targets off-road purists who sometimes need to haul the family—and it's better on the highway than you might think.

2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser
If head-turning style and true trail toughness are priorities, the 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser stands above most SUVs—although families and city commuters need not apply.
